Monkey Rolling, formerly known as the Drunken Monkey Set, is a competitive performance event in which competitors are required to demonstrate the fluid agility required to complete the Monkey Roll Set.

Uniform Requirements

Competitors in the Traditional Kata event are to be dressed in full traditional gi. See acceptable uniforms here

Time Requirements

Each competitor has 2 minutes to complete all 4 sections of their performance as follows:

Presentation

The competitor, upon reaching the center of the ring, verbally presents their name, style and the name of this performance event. Once presented the competitor requests and awaits the judge’s permission to begin performance.

Gratitude

Once permission is given, the competitor extends a thank you to the judges for the honor of being able to perform.

Performance

The competitor performs their Monkey Rolling demonstration, remaining within the ring boundaries. The techniques and sequence of techniques is below. The competitor is to perform as much of the sequence as they are able to.

Close

The competitor indicates completion of their performance by facing the judges in an at-ease position and addressing them as “judges.” Competitor is not to leave the ring until dismissed by the judges. When given permission to leave, the competitor bows before the judges then leaves the ring without turning their back to the judges.

  1. Overhead Roll
  2. Back Roll
  3. Deadman’s Drop
  4. Pencil Roll to left break fall
  5. Pencil Roll to right break fall
  6. Helicopter Recovery (either leg)
  7. Over Left Shoulder Roll to right break fall
  8. Helicopter Recovery (either leg) to knee
  9. Over Right Shoulder Roll to left break fall
  10. Helicopter Recovery (either leg) to knee
  11. Tripod to Headstand, hold and then Back Drop
  12. Tactical Recovery (either side)
  13. Parachute Drop
  14. Knees under recovery to Tiger Dive
  15. Knees under recovery to Overhead Dive Roll

Competitors that are able to complete the basic set can add to the set some or all of the following techniques in any selected order:

  1. Handspring
  2. Headspring
  3. Cartwheel
  4. Single handed Cartwheel
  5. Arial (no-handed cartwheel)
  6. Karp Kick (pop-up)
  7. Barrel Roll
  8. Wushu Butterfly Kick

Scoring

Accuracy – Completes a minimum of the 15 basic techniques, and performs additional techniques with clarity.

Speed – confident fluid movement transitioning between techniques and completing the performance within the 2 minute time limit.

Power – appropriate explosiveness and softness throughout performance. Quiet rolls and powerful falls. Solid landings.

Focus – avoids dizziness or overcommitment, landings solid and remains within boundaries. Closes well at center of ring. No hesitation between techniques.

Intensity – Conveys the spirit of combat and combat avoidance. Facial expressions, contrast between rolls, falls, and landings.
