What is the QBU?

In 1988, Kyoshi Ivan Ujueta laid the foundation for Ju-Ki-Do, a unique martial art style drawing inspiration from over 14 traditional martial arts systems. Since the founding of Ju-Ki-Do, numerous students from various age groups, demographics, and walks of life have been influenced, empowered, and transformed by its teachings. The core teachings of Ju-Ki-Do at The Professional Karate Institute Mixed Martial Arts (PKI MMA) encompass fitness, self-defense, and character development. As the primary hub for Ju-Ki-Do, PKI MMA, located in San Antonio, Castroville, Boerne, Helotes, and a sister school in Spring Branch, adheres to the philosophy that diversity in training allows individuals to discover a unique style that resonates with them, emphasizing the importance of solid foundations in producing skilled fighters.

Evolution of the Tournament

The tournament series has evolved from its inception as the Samurai Classic to the Champion’s Edge Tournament and now to the QBU Quest for the Best U Tournament in 2021. This annual event showcases the progress of students in various aspects of martial arts training. The QBU Tournament emphasizes a safe competitive environment, motivating students to push their boundaries. Aligned with Ju-Ki-Do philosophies, the tournament rules are crafted to maintain a balance between sport and practical self-defense, reflecting the holistic approach of the martial art style.

Event Types

The QBU Tournament consists of two main sections: Performance Events and Combat Events. In Performance Events, competitors demonstrate techniques or a demonstration before judges, with scores determining the winner. Combat Events involve direct competition within specific rule sets, showcasing competitors’ abilities to strategize and outscore or submit opponents, while preventing the opponent from scoring. The QBU Tournament encourages participation in both sections to develop well-rounded students proficient in both technique and the application of skills under varying pressure.

Tournament Mission Statement

The QBU Tournament carries a mission to unveil the universal fighter through competitions in kata, self-defense demonstrations, and combat forms such as Judo, Ippon Kumite, Grappling, and Ju Kumite. Beyond competition, the mission seeks to restore integrity to the competitive martial arts industry. By eliminating personal agendas and fostering an environment centered on three key objectives – having fun, bonding, and maintaining a win/win attitude – the tournament aligns with the words of Vince Lombardi, emphasizing that winning is not a sporadic achievement but a continuous commitment to doing things right.

In summary, the QBU Tournament is not merely a showcase of martial arts skills; it is a testament to the transformative power of Ju-Ki-Do, promoting diversity, balance, and integrity within the realm of competitive martial arts.
